For years, researchers at Columbia University in New York have tried to shed light on the mysteries of grief. The reason why people have such a hard time dealing with this particular emotion is unknown to science and Psychologists, whose profession is to study human behavior.
So far, one of the few assumptions scientists have reached is that many sicknesses – or most of them - are likely curable, but until now, no one has found a solution powerful enough to cure grief.
"We know that grief can destroy a person from the inside out, often causing irreversible damage. Yet, we’re unable to explain why this happens," said the scientists.
A team of scientists from Columbia University also explained how emotional experiences can trigger the release of a chemical signal that can alter the immune system’s function.
Currently, researchers in the field of psychoneuroimmunology science are putting together proof that there is a connection between emotions and diseases. The interaction between emotional states and physical arousals are triggered by emotions and can cause serious organic changes.
Tumors may be directly linked to grief.
Therefore, simple illnesses such as tonsillitis, diarrhea and headaches can be linked to altered emotional states, particularly grief. Other more serious complications can also be caused by what medicine calls somatization, which is when a personal distress is manifested by physical complaints through the medium of the body.
According to promoters of this theory, cancer, bronchitis, asthma, anorexia, hypertension and coronary heart disease are the most somatized by the human body. Tumors are the main effects of unresolved grief over the years.
Sicknesses: the body’s red light warning signal
Furthermore, the scientists explain that every feeling and emotion need to be respected and understood, so that they don’t turn out to be harmful to the body. As a result, undigested anxieties cause the body to call for help. "Because our body can’t talk, it ends up forming these sicknesses in order to bring to our attention the need to change our outlook," the scientists completed.
